Mistakes are part of life and not a reason to criticize yourself.
Cleanse
You often hear people talking about a cleanse or de-tox. They want to get rid of all the toxins in their bodies and believe that a special diet of only certain foods will get their bodies in the right place.
What if we did a cleanse of our minds? I’d like to ask you to take a break from negative self-talk. No more beating yourself up. Stop doubting yourself and reminding yourself of all your past mistakes. Let go of those. See them as part of your journey that got you where you are.
I hear business leaders say, “I’m my own worst critic” and wear it as a badge of honor. It’s not. It blocks you from your greatest performance.
For 48 Hours, No Negative Talk
A group of coaches I meet with regularly came up with the idea of a de-tox from negative self-talk. Go on a 48-hour bender and never say a bad word about yourself. See how that feels.
In our work as Positive Intelligence coaches we are often asked to look at childhood photos of ourselves. We are asked to see that beautiful kid in the picture – the girl who was unspoiled by the ups and downs of life, the guy who never doubted herself. Life sure has thrown some hard times at that kid.
But then we are asked a rhetorical question: Would you scream and yell at that kid for making a mistake? Would you beat her up mentally for a miscalculation? Would you let him ruminate on a past action that he cannot change? Of course not.
Mistakes are part of life, part of leadership, part of learning. How different would it be if instead of beating yourself up for mistakes, you simply said, “I am going to learn from that. This is how I am going to change.”
So stop hurting yourself. Don’t talk about yourself in a negative way. Do a cleanse from negative self-talk.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is Business Coaching?
The best coaches help you build mental fitness – an acuity for running your business and your life. It is different from consulting. Consultants give you the answers. Coaches help you search within yourself to find those answers.
How Do I Know if Business Coaching Is Right for Me?
Do you ever find yourself saying, “It’s lonely at the top”? Then business coaching is right for you. As your coach, I am a clear-eyed colleague who tells you the truth about your decisions. Whether you’re making excuses or breaking through to a better place.
Do You Only Work With Established Companies?
No. I work with all kinds of companies. Start-ups. Established companies who are headed in a new direction. The only qualification I ask of you is, “Do you have a growth mindset?” If the answer is yes, let’s work together.
