A Body In Motion

Be a Body in Motion

Inertia - the failure to move - kills many businesses
Motion Inertia

Science

Science was always my weakest subject in school, but some lessons in physics stayed with me. Years later I read James Gleick’s biography of Isaac Newton and thought it was the best book on business strategy I had ever read.

Mass. Gravity. Acceleration. Net force. Velocity. It did not take much imagination to realize these terms applied to business growth as much as they did to science and the laws of physics.

A Body in Motion

Inertia was the one that most fascinated me. When a body tries to oppose any agency that attempts to put it in motion, the power of inertia is in play. It has long struck me that inertia is what kills more businesses (not to mention human lives) than anything else.  It is just too easy, too simple to do nothing (or in the rules of business – to do exactly what you did yesterday).

Those who smartly challenge inertia vault ahead of competitors. Newton said that what gets us moving is an outside force. Something that compels us into action. What is that force in the life of your business? A worldwide pandemic? A worker shortage? A purchase attempt by investors? Or a significant change in strategy by your competitors?

I was searching for artwork I could use for my website (www.101businesscoach.com) and business coaching practice and came across this gadget that adorned many desks and waiting room coffee tables. It’s a captivating example of how one body in motion affects other bodies and places them in motion.

Find a Direction

This is what I try to do with all the business leaders I work with. We work together to oppose inertia and put the business in motion strategically in a way that pays off. All of the CEOs and company leaders in my Vistage group are examining new avenues for growth. Most of them are building on the existing business strategy that made them successful and taking that in a new and smart direction that will accelerate their growth.

When Newton died in 1727, he was so revered that he became the first scientist to be buried in Westminster Abbey. Not bad for a guy who wrote a bunch of theories on business growth.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Business Coaching?

The best coaches help you build mental fitness – an acuity for running your business and your life. It is different from consulting. Consultants give you the answers. Coaches help you search within yourself to find those answers.

How Do I Know if Business Coaching Is Right for Me?

Do you ever find yourself saying, “It’s lonely at the top”? Then business coaching is right for you. As your coach, I am a clear-eyed colleague who tells you the truth about your decisions. Whether you’re making excuses or breaking through to a better place.

Do You Only Work With Established Companies?

No. I work with all kinds of companies. Start-ups. Established companies who are headed in a new direction. The only qualification I ask of you is, “Do you have a growth mindset?” If the answer is yes, let’s work together.
